Gerd Is The Word

To say we’re excited to have Gerd Janson take over the controls for three hours at TNI this week for the AVA Festival warmup would be an huge understatement. For us he is one of the most important figures in dance music right now and for so many reasons.

Here are ten things we love about Gerd.

First and foremost he is an amazing DJ, both technically and most importantly through his first class selections and versatility.

He’s the brains behind Running Back Records, one of the best labels on the planet. RB covers so much ground and simply deliver quality every time. From well known artists like Maurice Fulton & Todd Terje to newcomers like Brain Ring. If Gerd digs, it goes out!

His DJ/Production duo with Philip Lauer as Tuff city kids make the kind of blissed out synth music we adore at TNI.

He’s super knowledgeable on the music front. When he’s not touring or in the studio, he can be found writing for the likes of Groove magazine or interviewing his peers for the Red Bull Music Academy.

He’s a dab hand at remixing, as shown here when he gave Midland the Janson treatment on Phonica’s in house label.

He holds down a residency at Berlin’s No 1 club institution Panorama Bar.

He also holds down a residency at Frankfurt’s hallowed and intimate Robert Johnson and always injects some fun into his sets.

He was called on to compile and commission the music for Rush Hour’s excellent Music For Autobahns compilation.

His own solo material merges elements of electro and disco with a nod to the cooler side of the 1980’s synths.

Super respected, Gerd only does back to back sets or collaborates with the best in the business. See Paul Woolford, Jackmaster & Prins Thomas for example.

With him at the controls for three hours this Saturday night and carrying some of the best music in the world with him, we are in for a treat.
